Major Storm Coming? Here’s Why You May Want to Evacuate.

3/13/2022 (Permalink)

A line of cars driving in the rain. SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle is here to help out homeowners suffering from minor and major storm damage.

While evacuating your home can be difficult in the face of a major storm, there are often more reasons to evacuate than to stay in place. Flood damage can cause many dangerous and unpredictable consequences if you’re trapped in your home, most of which could be avoided by temporarily evacuating to a safer area. Note that in some scenarios, staying at home may be less risky than seeking refuge elsewhere, especially if water is blocking roadways; a car can be carried away in water as little as 2 feet. However, here are just a few of the risks you can avoid by vacating the area.

Fire Risk

It might be strange to consider that fire can occur in a home suffering from flood loss but it is definitely possible. An electrical fire can start once the water reaches power outlets or electronic devices. Lighting and heat fixtures affected by water could be damaged and set fire nearby materials. In some cases, chemical fires may start as substances both within and from outside the home combine and react negatively. If you are still in your flooded home when a fire starts, it may be difficult to escape.

Rising Water

While some floods come and go quickly through your home, others may leave behind standing water. Getting into direct contact with standing water isn’t safe is it contaminated and could expose you to bacteria, sewage, and chemicals. That means if you live in a single story, it would be impossible to avoid the floodwater where with a two-story structure you can refuge in the upper floor.

Structural Instability

Floods can cause severe damage to the structural integrity of your home, even if it is a single story and of newer construction. Large volumes of water can rapidly disintegrate and even physically tear apart materials in your home, exacerbating existing problems and creating new ones. Particularly disastrous floods can even trap you in your home or cause personal injury. If you do remain in your home, try to stay on high ground and in a structurally stable location.

Are You Covered?

There’s more than just the initial extent of storm damage that homeowners should worry about. If not taken care of properly, water damage from a storm can turn into mold damage quite easily. That’s why it’s important to call a restoration company with years of experience and training to mitigate your home.

When Are New Castle County Winter Weather Warnings, Watches and Advisories Issued?

1/20/2022 (Permalink)

Background is light blue with a snowing cloud, the words "Winter weather alerts When a storm hits your New Castle County home, you need the company with storm damage experience and expertise.

When winter weather impacts our area, the National Weather Service issues several types of alerts. These include winter storm watches, warnings and advisories.

Advisories: Be Aware

Winter Weather Advisories are issued when a winter storm event (sleet, ice, snow, freezing rain, snow and blowing snow, or a combination of events) is expected to meet or exceed local winter weather advisory criteria in the next 12 to 36 hours but stay below warning criteria.

Criteria for Snow: 4 inches or more in 12 hours or less covering at least 50 percent of the zone or encompassing most of the population. Use "mid-point" of snowfall range to trigger advisory (i.e. 2 to 5 inches of snow = advisory).

Criteria for Ice: Any ice accumulation less than 1/2 inch over at least 50 percent of the zone or encompassing most of the population. Winter Weather Advisory can also be issued for black ice. This is optional.  Be prepared for winter driving conditions and possible travel difficulties.  Use caution when driving.

Freezing Rain Advisories are issued when light ice accumulation (freezing rain and/or freezing drizzle) is expected in the next 12 to 36 hours, (but will remain below 1/2 inch) for at least 50 percent of the zone or encompassing most of the population and not reach warning criteria.

Expect a glaze on roads resulting in hazardous travel.  Slow down and use caution while driving because even trace amounts of ice on the roads can be dangerous.

Wind Chill Advisories are issued when low wind chill temperatures are expected to meet or exceed local wind chill advisory criteria in the next 12 to 36 hours, but will not reach local warning criteria. Wind chill temperatures may reach or exceed -15°F.  Extremely cold air and strong winds will combine to generate low wind chill readings.

If you must venture outdoors, take precautions against frostbite and hypothermia. See the NWS Wind Chill Chart.

Watches: Be Prepared

Blizzard Watches are issued when conditions are favorable for a blizzard event in the next 24 to 72 hours. There is a potential for falling and/or blowing snow with strong winds or frequent gusts greater than or equal to 35 mph and extremely poor visibilities to less than a ¼ mile for 3 or more hours.

This can lead to whiteout conditions and make travel very dangerous.

Winter Storm Watches are issued when conditions are favorable for a significant winter storm event (heavy sleet, heavy snow, ice storm, heavy snow and blowing snow or a combination of events.)  There is a potential to meet or exceed local winter storm warning criteria in the next 24 to 72 hours.

Criteria for Snow: 7 inches or more in 12 hours or less; or 9 inches or more in 24 hours covering at least 50 percent of the zone or encompassing most of the population. Use "mid-point" of snowfall range to trigger a watch (i.e. 5 to 8 inches of snow = watch).

Criteria for Ice: 1/2 inch or more over at least 50 percent of the zone or encompassing most of the population.

Wind Chill Watches are issued when Conditions are favorable for wind chill temperatures to meet or exceed local wind chill warning criteria in the next 24 to 72 hours. There is the potential for a combination of extremely cold air and strong winds to create dangerously low wind chill values.

See the NWS Wind Chill Chart.  Wind chill temperatures may reach or exceed -25°F.

Warnings: Take Action!

Blizzard Warnings are issued when a blizzard event is imminent or expected in the next 12 to 36 hours and means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring.  There is potential for frequent gusts greater than or equal to 35 mph accompanied by falling and/or blowing snow with strong winds, frequently reducing visibility to less than ¼ mile for three hours or more.  May lead to whiteout conditions making travel extremely difficult.

Do not travel!  If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you.  If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle and wait for help to arrive.

Winter Storm Warnings are issued for a winter storm event (heavy sleet, heavy snow, ice storm, heavy snow and blowing snow or a combination of events) and is expected to meet or exceed local winter storm warning criteria in the next 12 to 36 hours.

Criteria for Snow: 7 inches or more in 12 hours or less; or 9 inches or more in 24 hours covering at least 50 percent of the zone or encompassing most of the population. Use "mid-point" of snowfall range to trigger warning (i.e. 5 to 8 inches of snow = warning).

Criteria for Ice: 1/2 inch or more over at least 50 percent of the zone or encompassing most of the population. Travel will become difficult or impossible in some situations.  Delay your travel plans until conditions improve.

Ice Storm Warnings are usually issued when there is an ice storm event is expected to meet or exceed local ice storm warning criteria in the next 12 to 36 hours.

Criteria for Ice: 1/2 inch or more over at least 50 percent of the zone or encompassing most of the population.

This amount of ice accumulation will make travel dangerous or impossible and likely lead to snapped power lines and falling tree branches.  Travel is strongly discouraged.

Wind Chill Warnings are issued when wind chill temperatures are expected to meet or exceed local wind chill warning criteria in the next 12 to 36 hours and for a combination of very cold air and strong winds that will create dangerously low wind chill values. Wind chill temperatures may reach or exceed -25°F. This level of wind chill will result in frostbite and lead to hypothermia if precautions are not taken.

Avoid going outdoors and wear warm, protective clothing if you must venture outside.  See the NWS Wind Chill Chart.

A Winter Weather Event

This is a winter weather phenomenon (such as snow, sleet, ice and wind chill) that impacts public safety, transportation and/or commerce.  It typically occurs during the climatological winter season between October 15 and April 15.

Weather Outlook

Winter weather that may cause significant impact in the 3 to 7 day forecast and eventually lead to the issuance of a watch or warning is contained in the Hazardous Weather Outlook.

Forecasts in the 3 to 7 day time period typically have a lot of forecast uncertainty.  Uncertainty is generally in the 30% to 50% range that the event will occur and reach warning criteria.  It is intended to provide information to those who need considerable lead time to prepare for the event.

Winter Weather Alerts and What They Mean

Winter weather alerts are issued by your local National Weather Service office.  Each office knows the local area and will issue Warnings, Watches or Advisories based on local criteria.

So, What Do These Alerts Mean?

Weather Advisory

Advisories are issued when a hazardous winter weather event is occurring, is imminent, or has a very high probability of occurrence (generally greater than 80%).  An advisory is for less serious conditions that cause significant inconvenience and if caution is not exercised, could lead to situations that may threaten life and/or property.

Weather Watch

A watch is generally issued in the 24 to 72 hour forecast time frame when the risk of a hazardous winter weather event has increased (50 to 80% certainty that warning thresholds will be met).  It is intended to provide enough lead time so those who need to set their plans in motion can do so.

Weather Warning

Warnings are issued when a hazardous winter weather event is occurring, is imminent, or has a very high probability of occurrence (generally greater than 80%).  A warning is used for conditions posing a threat to life or property.

Avoiding Water Damage Caused by Sump Pump Failure

1/3/2022 (Permalink)

Diagram of a sump pump in basement with all components labeled Don't forget that SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle will respond immediately to your call if you suffer from a storm loss.

If Your Sump Pump Fails, Your Basement Could Begin to Fill with Water

If you have a basement, that means your sump pump is the last in the line of defense against flooding in your house.  It safely diverts water away from your home and is crucial during times of heavy rainfall that it puts your home at risk of water damage.  You could find your basement under water if your sump pump fails!  Should that happen, it’s vital to act fast! Water damage can be an aggressive issue and if not dealt with properly and in a timely manner, it could lead to problems like structural damage, mold, and much more.

Tips to Avoid Water Damage

  1. Make sure your sump pump is in working order in the first place. Otherwise you are risking the chance that it could fail just when you need it the most.
  2. Every once in a while you should test your sump pump to confirm it is in proper working order. An easy way to test is by filling up the pit with water to see if it is immediately pumped away.  If not, you have a problem on your hands.
  3. Check the float control to make sure it is free and not restricted or hung up.
  4. Always check the sump pump inlet screen for any blockages after heavy rains. Blockage issues are one of the leading causes of sump pump failure.
  5. Replace the battery backup every 2-3 years.  The last thing you need is to find out your battery backup is dead in the middle of a power outage during a big storm.

Learn How to Prevent Pipes From Freezing, and How to Thaw Them If They Do Freeze

12/24/2021 (Permalink)

Close up of a red pipe with frozen icicles hanging off of it and the SERVPRO logo When storms hit your home, you'll need a company with storm damage experience and expertise. SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle can respond immediately.

Why Pipe Freezing is a Problem

Water has a unique property in that it expands as it freezes. This expansion puts tremendous pressure on whatever is containing it, including metal or plastic pipes. No matter the strength of a container, expanding water can cause pipes to break.

Pipes that freeze most frequently are:

  • Pipes that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines, and water sprinkler lines.
  • Water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements and crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets.
  • Pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation.

How to Protect Pipes From Freezing

Before the onset of cold weather, protect your pipes from freezing by following these recommendations:

  • Drain water from swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines following manufacturer's or installer's directions. Do not put antifreeze in these lines unless directed. Antifreeze is environmentally harmful, and is dangerous to humans, pets, wildlife, and landscaping.
  • Remove, drain, and store hoses used outdoors. Close inside valves supplying outdoor hose bibs. Open the outside hose bibs to allow water to drain. Keep the outside valve open so that any water remaining in the pipe can expand without causing the pipe to break.
  • Add insulation to attics, basements and crawl spaces. Insulation will maintain higher temperatures in these areas.
  • Check around the home for other areas where water supply lines are located in unheated areas. Look in the garage, and under kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Both hot and cold water pipes in these areas should be insulated.
  • Consider installing specific products made to insulate water pipes like a "pipe sleeve" or installing UL-listed "heat tape," "heat cable," or similar materials on exposed water pipes. Newspaper can provide some degree of insulation and protection to exposed pipes – even ¼” of newspaper can provide significant protection in areas that usually do not have frequent or prolonged temperatures below freezing.
  • Consider relocating exposed pipes to provide increased protection from freezing.

How to Prevent Frozen Pipes

  • Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.
  • When the weather is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing.
  • Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst.
  • If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F.

How to Thaw Frozen Pipes

  • If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, suspect a frozen pipe. Likely places for frozen pipes include against exterior walls or where your water service enters your home through the foundation.
  • Keep the faucet open. As you treat the frozen pipe and the frozen area begins to melt, water will begin to flow through the frozen area. Running water through the pipe will help melt ice in the pipe.
  • Apply heat to the section of pipe using an electric heating pad wrapped around the pipe, an electric hair dryer, a portable space heater (kept away from flammable materials), or by wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water. Do not use a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, charcoal stove, or other open flame device.
  • Apply heat until full water pressure is restored. If you are unable to locate the frozen area, if the frozen area is not accessible, or if you can not thaw the pipe, call a licensed plumber.
  • Check all other faucets in your home to find out if you have additional frozen pipes. If one pipe freezes, others may freeze, too.

How to Winterize Your Home on a Budget

12/23/2021 (Permalink)

Front of 2 story home covered in snow with SERVPRO logo When a winter storm hits your home, you need the company with storm damage experience and expertise.

Winterization is the process of preparing a home for the harsh conditions of winter. It is usually performed in the fall before snow and excessive cold have arrived. Stay warm, save money and prevent damage to your home from the cold and snow with these simple winterization tips.

Clean Your Gutters

Clear leaves, tree branches and debris from your gutters. Failure to do so can result in leaks and the overflow of water whenever rain falls or snow melts. Making sure that water can flow freely through your gutters now will help prevent icicles and ice dams from forming later.

The benefits of cleaning your gutters before winter will help you avoid the unfortunate event of your basement being flooded with water, rotted fascia boards, cracked walkways or patios and many other potential areas of damage.

Cost: Other than your sweat and time, free.

Winterize Your Pipes

When water freezes, it expands. So if the temperature of your pipes drops below 32 degrees, even for a short period, you run the risk of a pipe fracture or worse. Take precautions now to avoid a major water damage. Pipes that freeze most frequently are those that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines, water sprinkler lines, and water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements and crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets. Also, pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation are also subject to freezing.

Consider installing specific products made to insulate water pipes like a “pipe sleeve” or installing UL-listed “heat tape,” “heat cable,” or similar materials on exposed water pipes.

Cost: Pipe Sleeve $5 to $12 per sleeve; Insulation Tape $10 per pack;  Heat Cable $20 to $150 depending on length

Flush the Water Heater

Particles and sediment can collect over time in the bottom of your water heater, hindering the unit's efficiency. Flush the water through the drain valve to clear out the material and keep your heater functioning at its best.

Cost: 100% free if you do it yourself!

Clockwise Ceiling Fans

Set your ceiling fans to move in a clockwise direction. The gentle updraft pushes warm air, which naturally rises to the ceiling, down along the walls and back the floor. Homeowners who use ceiling fans during the winter can save as much as 15 percent on heating bills.

Cost: free if you have a fan.

Window Insulation Film

Window insulation film is a plastic film which can be applied to glass windows to reduce heat transfer. Window insulation film can keep up to 70% of heat from leaking out of the windows.

Cost:$5 to $15 per kit.

Weatherstripping

Place weatherstripping along doorjambs, and in the gaps between windows and sashes, to keep the chilly breezes out and the heat in. Weatherstripping can save you up to 20 percent on your heating bill. Choose a type of weatherstripping that will withstand the friction, weather, temperature changes, and wear and tear associated with its location.

Cost:$5 to $10 per roll.

Draft Guards

In a drafty room, heat escapes under the door. A Draft Guard is a flexible, rubber strip that seals the gap at the bottom of the door to keep out drafts and prevent heat loss.

Cost:$10 to $20 or free if you place a rolled towel at the bottom of the door.

Replace Filters

Well-oiled, clean HVAC machinery uses less energy and provides more effective heating and cooling than dirty equipment. A dirty filter will restrict airflow through the heating or cooling system.

Throughout the winter, evaluate the filters monthly and replace them if there's any accumulation of debris. Furnaces and heat pumps are operating constantly to stay ahead of the cold, circulating more air through the filter, leaving behind ample dust and debris to coat the filter.

Cost:$20 to $35 for a pack of filters.

Fiberglass Insulation

Fiberglass insulation slows the spread of heat, cold, and sound in structures. The material does this by trapping pockets of air, keeping rooms warm in the winter. For maximum heat retention, pack fiberglass insulation around basement doors, windows in unused rooms, and window AC units. Make sure your attic floor is insulated to stop heat from escape through the attic as it rises!

 Cost: around $25 per roll.

Programmable Thermostat

A programmable thermostat relieves homeowners of that responsibility, enabling them to configure a heating and cooling cycle that corresponds to their daily schedules. The US Department of Energy says you can save as much as 1% on your energy bill for every degree you lower your home's temperature during the winter. Install a programmable thermostat to save money by keeping the temp down when you're not at home.

Cost: prices vary from basic versions $35 to $60 to smart-home options in the $100 to $200 range.

Caulking

Any remaining gaps in siding, windows, or doors can be filled with caulk. For extra drafty windows and doors, caulk the inside too, pulling off moldings to fill all gaps in the insulation.

Cost: $10 for a caulk gun and less than $5 for a tube of caulk.

Chimney Balloon

A chimney balloon is a balloon made of special heat reactive, durable material. Its purpose is to block the opening of a chimney that is not in use. If you do not regularly use your fireplace, a chimney balloon is the ideal solution to stop chimney drafts and save energy.

Cost:$25 to $60 depending on the size of the balloon.

Everything from thunderstorms to tornadoes can wreak havoc on your property. Take matters into your own hands to prevent storm damage to your home, and be sure to call in the professionals at SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle when needed.

Look Up!

Take a peek at yours and your neighbor’s trees for any suspicious limbs. These include branches that appear to be decaying, ones that are too close to power lines, and ones that are too close to your home.

Practice Defensive Gardening

Sure, this isn’t an actual term, but it is a good concept! Once you know your house well, you’ll likely know the areas of your yard more prone to puddling and run off. Use landscaping to your advantage by planting wet-footed plants or installing confined pea gravel, or placing splash blocks to redirect gutter flow.

Prepare For The Worst

Spring storms can vary from the powerful to a light shower. While different in length, both can bring a significant rainfall which can quickly result in floods. Whether you have a French Drain, sump pump, or central drain, be sure to check it often and schedule routine maintenance.

Know Before You Go

Prior to leaving your house, check the forecast and plan accordingly. If storms are brewing, be sure to close windows, secure pots and planters, close umbrellas, and stack or tie down patio furniture.

Show Your Basement Some Love

If your basement doesn’t get much foot traffic, don’t forget that it still deserves storms protection. Make sure anything stored in the basement is kept at least 4 inches off the ground (especially irreplaceable items like photographs and mementos). Check your basement often for water or mold accumulation.

Spring Rain Brings Damage

5/3/2021 (Permalink)

Rain falling on a house on a hill When a storm hits your Bear home, you need the company with storm damage experience and expertise.

Springtime always seems to bring plenty of rain and plenty of rain always brings a higher risk of water damage to your home. The following are the most common causes of springtime water damage.

Roof Leaks

With the increased showers as well as high winds, roof damage can happen or be revealed as water seeps through your roof and damages your ceilings and walls. To reduce the risk of roof leaks, you should inspect your roof for any damages from the winter and inspect it after every major storm.

The most common cause of roof leaks is a damaged or missing shingle from storms or fallen branches. If you do experience water damage inside your home from the ceiling or wall, you will want to contact a professional from SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle to inspect the damage, remove the water, and remediate the damage.

Window & Door Leaks

Another common source of water damage is from old or damaged windows. Water especially from a huge storm can blow into cracks and crevices around your window causing water damage that may not be discovered quickly allowing mold to develop and cause further damage.

Make sure to inspect around your windows and doors for cracks or old caulking that has peeled or cracked off. You can usually caulk any small cracks or crevices to ensure water doesn’t seep into your home causing damage.

Broken Sump Pump

If you have a basement, you understand the importance of a sump pump. Without one, water can seep into your basement and cause lots of damage. One of the most common causes of a flooded basement is a sump pump that stopped working.

To prevent this from happening, you can do three things.

  • You can get a backup battery for your sump in case the power goes out.
  • You can get a backup sump pump that is usually set to come on if the water rises above the normal level for your working sump pump.
  • You can install a water sensor alarm on the floor near the sump pump. While you may still have some water damage, at least you will be able to catch it fast and have SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle’s professionals come out to pump out the water and dry out your basement.

Foundation Cracks

If the foundation around the base of your home and the basement walls cracks, water can seep into the basement or crawl space. A sump pump won’t help you since the water is seeping through the walls as opposed to being channeled to the sump pump.

Usually, people discover foundation cracks after a big storm or when a gutter is clogged and the water is falling right by your house. Repairing foundation cracks can be a very expensive job depending on the situation but without the repair, there is no way to prevent the water leaking into your basement or crawlspace.

It never hurts to walk around the perimeter of your home checking for any potential foundation cracks as well as checking any bare walls in your basement and/or crawlspace.

Flood Tips & Action Steps

6/16/2020 (Permalink)

Illustration of a flooded community SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle's quick response will help prevent secondary damage and help reduce restoration costs.

Floods rank as one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States. Whether you live near a coastline, along city streets, in the mountains, near a river or even in the desert, there is a potential for suffering flood damage. In fact, nearly 25% of last year’s claims paid by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) were for policies in moderate to low-risk communities. On average, floods cost $6 billion in annual losses in the U.S. Flooding can also result from plumbing failures, frozen pipes and damaged structures. Flood damage can affect your business operation in a variety of ways and can range in size from being isolated to a single room to entire floors being fully submerged.

Knowing how to prepare and deal with potential flooding in advance can affect how much of your property can be restored and how much has to be replaced.  Below are prevention, mitigation and restoration tips to follow until help arrives:

Flood Prevention Tips:

  • Determine if your property is in a floodplain.
  • In any emergency, always listen to the instructions given by local emergency management officials.
  • Carefully assess how your company functions, both internally and externally, to determine which staff, materials, procedures and equipment are absolutely necessary to keep the business operating.
  • Plan what you will do if your building, plant or store is not accessible. This type of planning is often referred to as a continuity of operations plan, or COOP, and includes all facets of your business.
  • Plan for payroll continuity.
  • Review your emergency plans annually. Just as your business changes over time, so do your preparedness needs. When you hire new employees or when there are changes in how your company functions, you should update your plans and inform your people.
  • Visit: ready.gov/america/local/index.html for a comprehensive plan and to learn about emergency plans for your state.

Flood Action Steps:

BEFORE A FLOOD

If an advanced Flood Warning has been issued, there are several precautions that can be taken to help minimize damage to certain areas of your business:

  • Turn off utilities at the main switches or valves if instructed to do so.
  • Disconnect electrical equipment and appliances.
  • Move vehicles out of low-lying parking garages.
  • Raise elevators from bottom floor.

AFTER A FLOOD

SAFETY FIRST

  • Account that all employees are safe by establishing evacuation plans in advance, identifying areas outside the building that are designated meeting places. Assign select individuals to keep a list of their assigned team’s names and contact numbers in order to account for their whereabouts.
  • If water enters the building and evacuation becomes impossible, move to an upper floor, and wait for rescuers.
  • While evacuating, avoid attempting to drive through floods or rising water, nearly half of all flash flood fatalities are auto-related.
  • Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.
  • Do not walk through moving water. Even six inches of moving water can make you fall.
  • Use no open flames (there may be gas escaping from ruptured mains).
  • Avoid floodwaters. Water may be contaminated by oil, gasoline or raw sewage. Water may also be electrically charged.
  • Stay out of any building if it is surrounded by floodwaters.
  • Listen for news reports to learn if the community’s water supply is safe to drink.
  • Return only when authorities indicate it is safe.

SECURE THE PROPERTY

  • Contact local emergency officials.
  • Secure main entrances to building.
  • Alert Security company and Alarm company of the situation.

STABILIZE THE PROPERTY

  • Shut off the source of water if possible or contact a qualified party to stop the water source.
  • Give priority to the protection of power plant and fire pumps, keeping them in service if at all possible.
  • Open basement or low-level windows to equalize water pressure on the building’s foundation and walls.
  • Begin water damage mitigation steps only if local emergency officials deem the structure safe to enter.
  • Notify your insurance agent or Risk Manager to determine insurance policy guidelines and steps to take.

Odors After Flooding

6/9/2020 (Permalink)

Man holding his nose outside of his house SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle has the training and equipment to identify and eliminate offensive odors left behind after a flood.

Flooding can leave behind unpleasant odors. The main culprit being mold, which creates musty odors that permeate your entire building. If the floodwater results in sewage loss within your building’s septic system, the smells will be even worse. The best way to remove these odors is to hire a professional water damage remediation company like SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle. Every flood damage event is a little different and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same.

Dry the Flooded Area

Any standing water will need to be extracted first. For the remaining dampness, professionals will bring in heavy-duty air movers to promote air circulation to aid in the drying process. Dehumidifiers can also help with removing moisture from the air.

Enhance Overall Air Quality

Indoor air quality is critical to your well-being. Replace furnace and air filters once every three months. You may also want to acquire a high-efficiency particulate air filter to remove substances that have entered the air through floodwater. Mold growth can lead to serious health complications, so if you smell something, act fast. Always allow a professional company to address any odors first before handling it yourself, because the wrong step could exacerbate the underlying problem.

Take Note of Lingering Odors

As part of the water damage restoration process, professionals at SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle will remove items too badly damaged from mold growth to remedy. This can include panels of drywall or flooring. This will assist with eliminating odor, but it’s important to pay attention to any lingering odors and contact SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle.

Avoid A Flooded Basement Caused by Sump Pump Failure

5/5/2020 (Permalink)

Diagram of a sump pump Our experience and scientific approach to water removal and water cleanup enable us to properly dry and restore your property.

If Your Sump Pump Fails, Your Basement Could Flood

If you have a basement, your sump pump is often your last line of defense against flooding.  It works by safely diverting water away from your house and is especially important during times of heavy rain when it puts your home at risk of flood damage.  If your sump pump fails, you could end up with a flood basement. If this happens, it is important to act fast! Water damage can be a progressive issue and if not dealt with in a timely manner, this could lead to structural damage, mold and much more.

Avoid A Flooded Basement

  1. It is important to make sure your sump pump is working properly.  Otherwise you risk the chance that it could fail when you need it most.
  2. After heavy rains, check the sump pump inlet screen for any blockages. Blockage is one of the leading causes of sump pump failure.
  3. Occasionally, test your sump pump to ensure it is working properly. You can do this by filling the pit with water and watch to see if it is pumped away.  If not, you may have a problem.
  4. Check the float control to make sure it is free and not restricted or hung up.
  5. Replace the battery backup every 2-3 years.  The last thing you need is to find out your batter backup is dead in the middle of a power outage during a big storm.

Be Prepared: Have a Emergency Plan for Your Vehicle

6/24/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Bear / New Castle can respond immediately to storm and flooding conditions.

To respond quickly in any disaster, your emergency planning should address every possible scenario. This includes emergencies while you’re in your vehicle; a roadside emergency can happen at any time. Below are key points to consider as you prepare a vehicle emergency plan:

  • Keep a kit of emergency supplies in your car. This kit should contain food, water, first aid supplies, and other supplies. Below is a checklist of emergency supply items for your vehicle.
  • Have an emergency plan for communicating and getting back together with your family if you are separated during a disaster.
  • Keep a full tank of gas in your car if an evacuation seems likely. Gas stations may be closed during emergencies and unable to pump gas during power outages. Plan to take one car per family to reduce congestion and delay.
  • If you are evacuating in your vehicle:
    • Leave early enough to avoid being trapped by severe weather or poor air quality.
    • Follow recommended evacuation routes (avoid shortcuts as they may be blocked).
    • Watch out for downed power lines and washed-out roads and bridges. Do not drive into flooded areas.

Roadside Emergency Kit Checklist

  • Cellular phone and charger
  • First aid kit
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Warning light, hazard triangle, or flares
  • Tire gauge
  • Jack and lug wrench
  • Foam tire sealant or a portable compressor and plug kit
  • Spare fuses
  • Jumper cables or a portable battery booster
  • Weatherproof flashlight
  • Gloves, hand cleaner, and clean rags
  • Auto-club card or roadside-assistance number (if you belong to an auto club or roadside-assistance program)
  • $20 in small bills and change
  • Pen and pad of paper
  • Basic tools
  • Extra clothing
  • Water and nonperishable emergency food (enough for at least 3 days)

How to Prevent Your Pipes from Freezing When You Have No Heat

1/29/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle can quickly and safely repair water damage caused by frozen pipes.

During Cold Weather, Take Preventative Action

  • Make sure to keep drapes and blinds open during the day to let the sun in, which can make a big difference in warming up your home. Then, close them at night to help keep the heat in.
  • If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F.

To Thaw Frozen Pipes

If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, suspect a frozen pipe.

Apply heat until full water pressure is restored.
  • Check all other faucets in your home to find out if you have additional frozen pipes. If one pipe freezes, others may freeze, too.
  • If you are unable to locate the frozen area, if the frozen area is not accessible, or if you can not thaw the pipe, call a licensed plumber.

SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle can quickly and safely repair water damage caused by frozen pipes.

Cold weather, snow, and ice storms can cause severe damage to your home or business. When these types of disasters strike, immediate action is necessary to prevent additional damage to your property. SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle has the winter storm experience, expertise, and the resources to remediate damage caused by winter weather.

What is FEMA?

10/30/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Bear / New Castle provides emergency cleaning and restoration services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

Located within the Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is responsible for coordinating the federal government's response to natural and manmade disasters

Many homeowners are unaware of this support system for victims of domestic disasters. Every year the most common, and expensive, national disaster is flooding. Even without flood insurance, people impacted by flood waters can get some monetary relief.

What Options Does FEMA Offer?

Renters, homeowners, and business owners have the choice to purchase a policy directly through The National Flood Insurance Program. This is a good decision if your home is located in a flood plain. However, even if you are not covered, there are two additional options to help fund flood damage repair of your home and property:

  • Apply for a grant, which does not need to be paid back. This money is for disaster-related expenditures such as emergency repairs to your home or short-term housing while your house is unlivable. Grants are not intended to fund complete restoration, but rather to help you return your home to a safe condition.
  • Apply for a disaster loan, which does need to be paid back. However, you can borrow enough money to completely restore your home to pre-flood condition.

How Do Homeowners Access Support?

  • You are eligible for FEMA’s programs when a declared disaster causes damage to your home or property. A member of your household must be a US citizen or qualified alien. You may be eligible for other types of assistance if the members of your home are undocumented.
  • An inspector will contact you to inspect the damage. The next step includes working with a qualified flood and water restoration specialist, who restores your home and personal property.

Storm and Hail Damage to Your Delaware Home

10/23/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Bear / New Castle responds immediately to your flood and storm damage emergencies.

Hail and other storms can cause major damage to your roof—often to the point where roof repair or replacement is needed.

On an asphalt roof, you'll notice hail damage by the appearance of bruises, or dark spots, where roofing granules have been blown away. In some cases, there may be cracks, holes, or missing shingles. After a tornado or other severe windstorm, you may even see split seams and missing or torn shingles. On other roof materials—including slate, tile, metal and wood—damage may include: cracked, broken, or missing shingles; torn or split seams; and missing sections of the roof. Your home may even have structural damage if a tree limb or other object falls onto your roof. A roof repair professional will use extreme caution in dealing with such a situation.

No matter the type of roof damage, it can result in leaks and severe water damage, which can lead to other serious problems. It takes great expertise to determine the right steps to fix these issues.

Reputable water restoration companies have highly trained restoration technicians who provide quality storm damage cleanup and restoration. The storm restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle can advise you on how to resolve situations such as water damage, flood damage, ice damage and ice damming. Also, it is important to contact a skilled roofing professional in Delaware, to handle the roof damage and roof leaks and provide the necessary roof repair during storm remediation

Water Damage Caused by a Storm in Delaware

10/10/2018 (Permalink)

We have the storm damage restoration experience and specialized equipment to restore your Delaware home or business back to pre-storm condition.

Flooding in your home can occur for a few reasons. Heavy rains, such as from a hurricane or another severe or torrential storm, typically cause flooding. Flooding may also occur due to a major plumbing issue. No matter the cause, water needs to be removed quickly so that the significant task of flood damage repair can begin. It’s important to find the right company to do the job. Here’s what to consider.

The Type of Services Available

When water enters your home, it can impact almost every surface. Drywall and wood features can become warped and may even rot or decompose. Fabrics and upholstery may become stained and moldy. Electrical work may go on the fritz. These are just a few of the many issues, and all will need to be remedied before the repair work is completed. Some items may be salvaged, but others will need to be fixed or replaced. The best results will be from a company that focuses on restoring your property to its former condition in a timely manner. The company may need to offer water remediation services if water is still in the home, and advanced equipment should be used to ensure thorough results. It’s also important that the company takes a full approach to repair work, including working with your insurance company to file a claim.

A Certified Company

While there may be several companies in your local area that offer flood damage cleanup services, you don’t want to trust just any company with this important project. Instead, you want to work with a certified company that has a great reputation. Look for a company that is affiliated with or certified by the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification, or IICRC. The certification to look for is the Cleantrust certification. In addition, while you should act quickly to schedule service with a flood damage cleanup company, you should also spend a few minutes reading consumer reviews to determine if the company is known for providing fast, quality work.

An Immediate Response with Focused Effort

When you contact a professional flood cleanup company for assistance, you should inquire about availability. The company ideally will offer around-the-clock service if you are dealing with a flooding issue in your home. You typically only have a number of hours to dry out the home before the potential risk for mold growth increases, so a timely response is imperative. In addition, ask about the steps the company will take to follow through on the work, the finished results you should expect, and the anticipated time frame. Flood damage cleanup can be significant, and the process may be lengthy. However, the company should be focused on working on your home until the work is completed.

At the first sign of a flood in your home, begin searching for a reputable company. When you focus on these factors, you can expect superior results.

What Happens If Lightning Strikes Your Home?

8/7/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Bear / New Castle responds immediately to your flood and storm damage emergencies.

A cloud-to-ground lightning bolt's main objective is to find the path of least resistance from the cloud to deep into the ground. Your house is filled with many potential routes for lightning to follow. This includes gutters, downspouts, metal window frames, water and gas pipes, electric lines, phone lines, cable TV/internet lines—anything conductive in your house. Lightning doesn't need conductive objects to reach ground, but conductive objects make lightning’s journey even more convenient.

Lightning passing through your home will often “branch” and use more than one path to ground at a time. It can also jump through the air from one conductive path to another in what is called a side flash. For example, lightning may first connect to electric lines in the attic of a house, then jump to better-grounded water pipes on a lower floor. Bolts have been seen jumping from wall outlets to sink faucets and even across rooms!

Three Major Hazards to Homes Hit Directly

Fire Danger

The biggest danger lightning poses to a house is fire. Wood and other flammable building materials can easily be ignited anywhere an exposed lightning channel comes in contact with (or passes through) them. It is most common for lightning to start a fire in the attic or roof of a house, as the channel usually has to pass through some of the roof’s structural material before it can reach a more conductive path such as wiring or pipes. When lightning current travels through wires, it will commonly burn them up—presenting a fire ignition hazard anywhere along the affected circuits.

Power Surge Damage

If lightning chooses any of the home's electrical wiring as its primary or secondary path, the explosive surge can damage even non-electronic appliances that are connected. Even if most of the lightning current takes other paths to ground, the home's electrical system will experience enough of a surge to cause potentially significant damage to anything connected to it, electronics in particular.

Shock Wave Damage

Another major source of damage from lightning is produced from the explosive shock wave. The shock waves that lightning creates is what produces the thunder that we hear, and at close range, these waves can be destructive. Lightning can easily fracture concrete, brick, cinderblock, and stone. Brick and stone chimneys can be damaged severely by lightning. Lightning's shock waves can blow out plaster walls, shatter glass, create trenches in soil, and crack foundations. Shrapnel is a common secondary damage effect, with objects sometimes found embedded in walls!

What to Do If Lightning Strikes Your House

If you know your house has been struck, call the fire department immediately. Ignited materials in the roof or walls may start with a slow burn before turning into a full house fire. A lightning fire is particularly dangerous for this reason, and you should always take steps to ensure the safety of your home and family.

  • Call your local fire department or 911 if you smell smoke. If a fire starts in the attic, you may not notice right away. The fire department can perform an inspection and search for issues.
  • Find an electrician to assess your wiring and make sure there are no damaged wires that may cause a fire hazard later.
  • Inspect your roofing and siding for damage from the strike itself.

How to Stay Safe in Your Home

While rare, it is possible to receive a lightning injury inside a house. Burns and electric shock injuries can occur when someone is in direct contact with one of lightning's chosen paths to the ground. The most common indoor lightning injuries involve a person talking on a corded phone or resting on/looking out of a metal-framed window. "Side flashes" (discussed above) that jump across rooms can also cause injuries. Again, they are rare.

Things to Avoid

  • Taking a shower or bath
  • Doing dishes
  • Using electronics (computers, video games, or wired phone, tools or appliances)
  • Metal-framed windows
  • Direct skin contact with earth ground. This is because lightning current can travel through soil and across wet/damp concrete. Wear shoes if walking in a basement, garage, or patio.

15 Random Facts About Winter Weather

11/27/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle is dedicated to responding immediately to water and storm damage emergencies.

What’s Happening Outdoors This Time of Year

1.   IT SNOWS WHERE YOU LEAST EXPECT IT.

Snow has been known to touch down anywhere from the Sahara Desert to Hawaii – even the driest place on Earth isn’t immune.  In 2011, the Atacama Desert in Chile received nearly 32 inches of snow, thanks to a rare cold front from Antarctica.

2.   SNOWFLAKES COME IN ALL SIZES.

The average snowflake ranges from a size slightly smaller than a penny to the width of a human hair, but according to some unverified sources, they can grow much larger.  Witnesses of a snowstorm in Fort Keogh, Montana, in 1887, claimed to see saucepan-sized crystals fall from the sky.  If true, that would make them the largest snowflakes ever spotted, at around 15 inches wide!

3.   A LITTLE WATER CAN MAKE A LOT OF SNOW.

The air doesn’t need to be super moist to produce impressive amounts of snow.  Unlike plain rainfall, a bank of fluffy snow contains lots of air that adds to its bulk.  That’s why what would have been an inch of rain in the summer, equals about 10 inches of snow in the colder months.

4.   YOU CAN HEAR THUNDERSNOW WHEN THE CONDITIONS ARE RIGHT.

If you’ve ever heard the unmistakable rumble of thunder in the middle of a snowstorm, that’s not your ears playing tricks on you.  It’s likely thundersnow, a rare winter weather phenomenon that’s most common near lakes.  When relatively warm columns of air rise from the ground and form turbulent storm clouds in the sky during the winter, there is potential for thundersnow.  A few more factors are still necessary for it to occur – namely air that is warmer than the cloud cover above it, and wind that pushes the warm air upwards.

5.   SNOW FALLS AT 1 TO 6 FEET PER SECOND.

This is at least true in the case of snowflakes with broad structures, which tend to act as parachutes.  Snow that falls in the form of pellet-like graupel travels to Earth at a much faster rate.

6.    IT DOESN’T TAKE LONG FOR THE TEMPERATURE TO DROP.

Rapid City, South Dakota weather records from January 10, 1911, show just how fast temperatures can plummet.  The day started out at a pleasant 55°F.  Then, over the course of 15 minutes, a wicked cold front brought the temperature down to 8°F.  This day still holds the record for the quickest cold snap in history!

7.   THE EARTH IS CLOSEST TO THE SUN DURING THE WINTER.

Every January (the start of the winter season in the northern hemisphere), the Earth reaches the point in its orbit that it is nearest to the Sun.  Despite some common misconceptions, the seasonal drop in temperature has nothing to do with the distance of our planet from the Sun.  It instead has everything to do with which direction the Earth’s axis is tilting, which is why the two hemispheres experience winter at different times of the year.

8.   MORE THAN 22 MILLION TONS OF SALT ARE USED ON U.S. ROADS EACH WINTER.

This comes out to total approximately 137 pounds of salt per person!

9.   THE SNOWIEST CITY ON EARTH IS IN JAPAN.

Aomori City, in northern Japan, receives more snowfall than any major city on the planet.  Each year, citizens are pummeled with 312 inches (or about 26 feet) of snow on average!

10.   SOMETIMES SNOWBALLS FORM THEMSELVES.

Something strange happened in northwest Siberia – mysterious, giant snowballs began washing up on a beach along the Gulf of Ob.  It turns out that these ice orbs were formed naturally by the rolling motions of wind and water.  With some spheres reaching nearly 3 feet in width, you wouldn’t want to use this frozen ammunition in a snowball fight!

11.   WIND CHILL IS CALCULATED USING A PRECISE FORMULA.

When the weatherman reports a “real feel” temperature of -10 degrees outside, it may sound like he’s coming up with that number on the spot; however, wind chill is actually calculated using a complicated equation devised by meteorologists.  For math enthusiasts who would like to test this theory at home, the formula reads:  Wind Chill = 35.74 + 0.6215T – 35.75(V^0.16) + 0.4275T (V^0.16).

12.   CITIES ARE FORCED TO DISPOSE OF SNOW IN CREATIVE WAYS.

When snow piles up too high for a city to manage, it’s usually hauled away to parking lots, or other wide open spaces, where it can sit until the weather warms up.  During particularly snowy months, cities are sometimes forced to dump snow into the ocean, only to be met with criticism from environmental activists.  Some cities employ snow melting machines that use hot water to melt 30 to 50 tons of snow per hour.  This method is quick, but costly — a single snow melting machine can cost $200,000, and burn 60 gallons of fuel in one single hour of use.

13.   WET SNOW IS BEST FOR SNOWMAN BUILDING, ACCORDING TO SCIENCE.

Physics confirms what you’ve likely known since childhood - snow on the wet or moist side, is best for building your own backyard Frosty the Snowman.  One scientist pegs the perfect snow-to-water ratio at 5:1.

14.   SNOWFLAKES AREN’T ALWAYS UNIQUE.

Snow crystals usually form unique patterns, but there’s at least one instance of identical snowflakes in the record books. In 1988, two snowflakes collected from a Wisconsin storm, were confirmed to be twins at an atmospheric research center in Colorado.

15.   THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET.

Freezing rain and sleet can both have scary effects on driving conditions, but their formations differ in some key ways.  Both types of precipitation occur when rain formed in warm air passes through a layer of cold air near the ground.  Thicker layers of cold air create sleet – a slushy form of water that’s semi-frozen by the time it reaches the Earth.  Thinner layers don’t give rain enough time to freeze until it hits the surface of the ground, which then forms a thin coat of ice wherever it lands.

Drafty Windows? Solutions for Every Budget

11/27/2017 (Permalink)

The SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle can provide help whether you're dealing with a blizzard, hurricane, or flood

8 Easy DIY Projects to Help Dispel Those Drafts

As outside temperatures plummet, leaky windows can make the inside of your home feel downright chilly. Obviously, the permanent solution to drafts is to replace old and leaky windows with new, energy-efficient versions. Not everyone, however, can afford the substantial cost of replacement windows, and for those who are renting a home, expensive projects simply don't make sense. But there are some quick and easy fixes for drafty windows that can make a big difference in both your comfort level and your heating bills. Indeed, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, reducing drafts in a home can result in energy savings that range between 5 and 30 percent per year, while keeping your family snug and cozy. Here are a few easy projects to help dispel those drafts.

  1. Locate the Source

Find the source of drafts in your home using a matchstick or candle. Slowly move the flame around the window frame. If the flame bends or flickers at any point, use a small sticky note to mark the spot so you can come back and seal it.

  1. Draft Snake

Make or purchase a draft snake to prevent warm air from escaping—or cold air from entering—around the sills of drafty windows and under doors. Draft snakes can be made of virtually any fabric, including old towels or socks.

  1. Storm Stoppers

Install interior storm windows, which fit into the inside of an existing window frame. As an alternative to storm windows, plexiglass or clear acrylic panels can be secured with screws in the corners of the window frame.

  1. Plastic Shrink Wrap

Apply plastic shrink film to the indoor window frame with double-sided tape, then heat the plastic with a blow dryer to shrink the film and remove wrinkles. Most home improvement stores sell plastic shrink insulation kits that can be easily installed in minutes.

  1. Caulk

Window caulking is one of the first lines of defense against cold air —but it can develop cracks or gaps over the years. Seal small cracks by adding a new layer of caulk or by adding rope caulk, which can be molded into the cracks. If there are large gaps or cracks, remove the old caulk and replace it.

  1. Bubble Wrap

If you don’t need to open a window all winter, use bubble wrap to seal it. You can buy bubble wrap by the roll and cut it to fit your drafty windows. Use double-sided tape to keep the plastic in place.

  1. Window Treatment

Seasonally swap out your lightweight curtains for insulating window treatments. Opt for heavy draperies or layered curtains; honeycomb shades, which trap air between layers of fabric to provide insulation; or roman shades.

  1. Weather Stripping

Repair, replace, or add weather stripping around drafty windows and doors. Choose from self-stick rubber weather stripping, sold in rolls; felt weather stripping, sold in sheets; V-seal weather stripping, sold in both plastic and spring-metal versions; or expandable spray foam weather stripping, sold in aerosol cans.

Tree Maintenance & Care: Steps to Take Before a Storm

11/15/2017 (Permalink)

Winter damage can become worse over time if you don’t take care of it in a timely way.

Trees Can Pose a Safety Hazard to Your New Castle Home If They Are Not Properly Inspected and Maintained

Trees can present a particularly significant danger during a storm. Wind, lightning, snow and ice can all transform a tranquil row of trees into an imminent threat to your property. Proper tree maintenance involves more than pruning and trimming overgrown branches. These are some of the key steps you can take to protect your trees and prevent them from becoming a safety hazard.

Steps to Take Before a Storm

  • Remove any dead trees on your property.
  • Maintain the health of trees through timely watering, proper fertilization and protection from soil compaction. Healthy trees will be able to better adapt to changes in the environment and remain firm in the wind.
  • Regularly prune dead or broken limbs to help trees maintain their structural integrity.
  • Remove or treat pest problems immediately to minimize potential damage to trees.

Six Signs to Monitor

Make safety a priority when performing maintenance on your trees. Contact a professional tree-care service if you are not able to safely prune or remove trees in your yard.

Consult with a professional if the trees in your yard display any of the following characteristics:

  • Cracks in the trunk or major limbs.
  • Signs of hollowing and decay.
  • Mushrooms growing from the bark.
  • Significant leaning to one side.
  • Limbs in contact with power lines.
  • Branches hanging over your house.

Even the healthiest and strongest of trees will break under the weight of ice. Broken tree limbs account for much of the storm damage from icy weather in New Castle County. A tree limb encased in a block of ice can weigh hundreds of pounds and can easily crash through roofs and even crush a car.

Heavy snow and high winds can knock down tree limbs, taking out power lines, damaging siding, and generally making your landscaping look a mess. Getting your trees trimmed can help prevent this type of damage, as well as keep your trees healthy and looking great.

Winter damage can become worse over time if you don’t take care of it in a timely way. Always make sure to inspect your home in both the fall and in the spring to repair any damage that could affect your home’s condition. By taking care of minor issues before winter, you can help prevent larger ones, while taking care of any damage after the cold weather has passed can help your home be ready for anything.

11/7/2017 (Permalink)

Regardless of the Winter Storm SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle, DE Can Help.

What Are Winter Storms and How You Can Prepare Your Family

What are winter storms?

A winter storm is an event in which varieties of precipitation are formed that only occur at low temperatures, such as snow or sleet, or a rainstorm where ground temperatures are low enough to allow ice to form (i.e. freezing rain).

Why talk about winter storms?

A major winter storm can last for several days and be accompanied by high winds, freezing rain or sleet, heavy snowfall, and cold temperatures. People can become trapped at home, without utilities or other services. Heavy snowfall and blizzards can trap motorists in their cars. Attempting to walk for help in a blizzard can be a deadly decision.

What can I do to prepare for a winter storm?

  • Learn the winter storm risk in New Castle County.
  • Understand the hazards of wind chill, which combines the cooling effect of wind and cold temperatures on exposed skin.
  • Sign up now to receive text messages and optional emergency alerts in our area. Stay tuned to local television or radio station or community alert system for emergency information.
  • Service vehicles and snow removal equipment prior to winter storm season.
  • Fuel up vehicles and equipment for emergency use and to keep the fuel line from freezing.
  • Make sure your emergency survival kit is stocked with essential items and kept in an easily accessible location.
  • Fully charge portable electronic devices.

What to do during a winter storm watch?

  • Listen to a portable battery-powered radio, television, or a smart phone for updated emergency information.
  • Be aware of changing weather conditions.
  • Keep portable electronic devices charged. Have a car charger available in case of a power outage.

  • If you lose electricity, do not use a generator indoors or in an enclosed space.

7 Things to Do Right Now for a Warmer Winter

11/7/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle, DE is here to help you prepare for and deal with the winter weather.

Keep Toasty All Winter Long

The crisp snap of autumn weather is a reminder that even colder days lie ahead. Get ready for them by performing a few simple chores now that will keep you toasty all winter long.

Weather Strip

Weather stripping can save you up to 20 percent on your heating bill — especially if you have drafty windows or doors; plus, it's quick, easy and doesn't cost a lot of money.  Place weather stripping along doorjambs, and in the gaps between windows and sashes, to keep the chilly breezes out and the heat in.

Fix Door Drafts

If your doors need extra draft protection, add a door sweep along the bottom.  These flexible, rubber strips seal the gap at the bottom of the door to keep howling winds at bay.  If cold air is still getting in, buy or DIY a door snake (a tube of fabric filled with sand, rice, or other material) to lay on the floor and plug the gap.

Insulate

The attic and basement are two spots where you can lose a lot of heat.  By insulating your basement ceiling and your attic floor, you can prevent warm air from escaping your home.   Also, check around the exterior of your house for any cracks in the foundation, gaps, or cable holes, and seal or fill them with spray foam insulation.

Furnace Checkup

Your furnace works better if it’s properly maintained.  Some utility providers offer a free annual checkup for your furnace, but if yours doesn't, it may be worth paying a technician to ensure that your furnace is in top condition.  You can also improve your furnace performance with simple maintenance yourself, like replacing filters and cleaning registers.

Swap Your Thermostat

Standard thermostats can lead to wasted energy.  If you opt for a smart thermostat, you could cut down on your energy use — and your utility bills.  Among other features, these smart thermostats can sense when you're away and automatically adjust the temperature to save you money.

Seal Ducts

If you have forced-air heat, leaks in your ducts could be costing you hundreds of dollars.  Seal them with specially designed metal tape and keep your ducts — and your wallet — more secure.

Embrace Fabrics

Cover your floors in throw rugs and runners for the winter months.  You can also hang heavy, insulating drapes in front of your windows to keep warm air in and the cold out, where it belongs.

Severe thunderstorms can lead to flash flooding. Call SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle, DE at (302) 392-6000 if you have storm damage.

Rising water is one of the most frightening problems that a homeowner may face, and the resulting flood clean-up is both costly and time-consuming. It is a scary prospect watching floodwaters creep slowly toward your home. If high water makes an incursion, severe damage and a horrible clutter of muck, debris, and germs may follow. Acting quickly after the water recedes can decrease the damage and perhaps make some possessions and furniture salvageable. Even carpet may be restorable, depending on the extent and the type of the flooding. Unfortunately, many electronics exposed to the water are typically considered a loss. Don’t take water damage lightly. Even if the area only had an inch of water, or is just damp, it can become the ideal situation for mold growth within days. Mold may contaminate walls, carpet, furniture, and flooring. It can lead to breathing issues including asthma, and severe illness. Learn more about Mold and its negative impact on your health.

Below are some useful flood clean-up tips for home and business owners. If any mold is suspected, we recommended using the services of an IICRC-certified mold remediation specialist such as SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle, DE rather than attempting clean-up yourself.

Clean Up Tips for Homeowners

  • Before going into the house to begin flood clean-up, check for downed power lines, gas leaks, foundation cracks, or other obvious problems.
  • If power lines are down near the home, avoid puddles or standing water. Calling on professional help is the best way to avoid injury or electrocution.
  • Be on the lookout for wild animals, including snakes. Floodwaters tend to uproot them from their natural areas, and it is possible that they have entered the home or are in the general vicinity.
  • While cleaning up, wear protective gear such as boots and rubber gloves.
  • Waterlogged cleaning products, paint, batteries, and fuel are contaminated and considered hazardous. Learn more about disposal of these items.
  • Discard food items and drinking water if it has come into contact with the flood waters. This includes canned goods and bottled water. Follow the maxim: When in doubt, throw it out!

Avoiding Water Damage From Sump Pump Failure

9/18/2017 (Permalink)

If your basement has water damage caused by a sump pump failure call SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle, DE (302) 392-6000

If Your Sump Pump Fails, Your Delaware City Basement Could Begin To Fill With Water.

If you have a basement, your sump pump is often your last line of defense against flooding.  It works by safely diverting water away from your house and is especially important during times of heavy rain when it puts your Delaware City, DE home at risk of water damage.  If your sump pump fails, you could find your basement under water.  When this happens, it is important to act fast! Water damage can be a progressive issue and if not dealt with in a timely manner, this could lead to structural damage, mold and much more.

Is My Sump Pump Working? Tips to Avoid Water Damage

  1. It is important to make sure your sump pump is in working order.  Otherwise you risk the chance that It could fail when you need it most.
  2. After heavy rains, check the sump pump inlet screen for any blockages, one of the leading causes of sump pump failure.
