Be Prepared: Have a Emergency Plan for Your Vehicle
6/24/2019 (Permalink)
To respond quickly in any disaster, your emergency planning should address every possible scenario. This includes emergencies while you’re in your vehicle; a roadside emergency can happen at any time. Below are key points to consider as you prepare a vehicle emergency plan:
- Keep a kit of emergency supplies in your car. This kit should contain food, water, first aid supplies, and other supplies. Below is a checklist of emergency supply items for your vehicle.
- Have an emergency plan for communicating and getting back together with your family if you are separated during a disaster.
- Keep a full tank of gas in your car if an evacuation seems likely. Gas stations may be closed during emergencies and unable to pump gas during power outages. Plan to take one car per family to reduce congestion and delay.
- If you are evacuating in your vehicle:
- Leave early enough to avoid being trapped by severe weather or poor air quality.
- Follow recommended evacuation routes (avoid shortcuts as they may be blocked).
- Watch out for downed power lines and washed-out roads and bridges. Do not drive into flooded areas.
