A water loss can not only significantly damage both your structure and belongings, but other issues like electrical and slipping hazards can cause bodily harm. It’s important to understand what activities are safe for you to perform and whether you should evacuate the premises until help arrives.

What to Do After Water Damage
- Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas when access to the panel is safe from electrical shock.
- Gather loose items from floors.
- Remove excess water by mopping and blotting.
- Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
- Remove colored rugs from wet carpeting.
- Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removal of lamps and tabletop items.
- Remove and prop wet upholstery and cushions.
- Remove art objects to a safe, dry place.
- Turn air conditioning on for maximum drying in the summer.
What NOT to Do After Water Damage
- Don’t enter affected areas if electrical outlets, switches, circuit breakers, or electrical equipment are exposed to water. Always avoid electrical shock hazards.
- Don't leave wet fabrics in place; hang furs and leather goods to dry.
- Don't leave books, magazines, or other colored items on wet carpet or floors.
- Don't use your household vacuum to remove water.
- Don't turn on your television or other household appliances.
- Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet, and keep out of rooms where ceilings are sagging.
